A group of colleagues discuss the challenges facing leadership in Europe in this moment

Europe’s Leadership Moment

European businesses are experiencing a combination of pressures that have shifted what it takes to be competitive. Geopolitical instability, regulatory complexity, economic headwinds, rapid advances in AI, and talent challenges increasingly interact, making it harder for those in positions of leadership in Europe to address any single challenge in isolation.

Our research report draws on the experiences of 1,741 European leaders, compared with 15,468 non-European leaders globally, to understand the most critical leadership challenges facing organizations across Europe. The findings reveal a clear pattern: many of today’s most pressing challenges are not individual skill gaps, but system-level tensions that require system-level capabilities.

3 Capabilities for Leadership in Europe To Compete in a System Under Pressure

Our research identifies 3 capabilities for those in positions of leadership in Europe to help their organizations turn pressure into performance:

  1. Complexity Management: From System Overload to System Clarity. Leaders are navigating competing priorities across increasingly interconnected systems. Complexity management is the ability to create alignment within that complexity — making interdependencies visible, clarifying decision rights across boundaries, and sequencing priorities so that organizations can execute together.
  2. Anchored Innovation: From Innovation Pressure to Strategic Focus. AI and technological acceleration are creating more possibilities, but more options do not necessarily lead to better innovation. Leaders need the judgment to identify, prioritize, and act on the innovations that truly support business strategy — moving from chasing opportunities to committing to the right ones.
  3. Critical Transfer: From Knowledge Gaps to Leadership Continuity. As European organizations face generational shifts and leadership transitions, critical experience, judgment, and institutional knowledge are at risk of being lost. Organizations need to make developing others and transferring leadership wisdom an integral part of how experienced leaders work.

Together, these capabilities help organizations address a central challenge facing leadership in Europe today: how to lead effectively when the environment refuses to hold still.

By strengthening complexity management, anchored innovation, and critical transfer, organizations can build leadership systems that are better equipped to navigate sustained uncertainty while maintaining alignment, focus, and continuity.
