More than 100 HR professionals attended the yearly AmCham HR Conference in Moscow on October 16. Marc Dellaert — General Director at CCL for Russia, Turkey and the CIS Region — delivered a keynote speech on engagement in times of crisis.
Engagement is an emotional, social and intellectual connection between an employee and its employing organisation that has a measurable effect on the behaviour and on the work activities thus better achieving the goals of an organisation. We are living in an era of hypercompetition and VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity) where knowledge and service become increasingly important. To make organisations more innovative, allow them to make decisions faster and become more agile, leaders have an incredible responsibility to lead by example and to build a culture of engagement.
Marc Dellaert: ‘In times of crisis we see a deficit of engagement. Organisations must learn how to deal with complex and continuous change and leaders should factor in the human side of leading change and transformation. 70 percent of change projects fail because of poor leadership.’
Engagement is more than employee satisfaction. Motivation, retention, advocacy, pride, identification, trust, fairness and voice are equally important. Research demonstrates that engagement has a significant positive impact on the performance of employees and their organisations. By building individual and organisational leadership capability organisations can better overcome economic crises, restructurings and mergers & acquisitions without disengaging their talent and losing their competitive advantage.
Karina Basharova, Portfolio Manager at CCL, facilitated a workshop on the competencies of the XXI Century based on the work of Bob Johansen from the Institute of the Future. We should rethink the competencies that we need to be successful in the new world. Successul leaders are aware of their strengths and development areas and are agile to learn. One of 10 critical competencies for the future is dealing with dilemmas.
