Questions to Boost On-the-Job Learning

If you are taking on a new job, a larger role or a special assignment, you need to learn fast. But you also need to be thoughtful about what and how you learn.

To help you facilitate learning from what CCL calls a “developmental assignment,” reflect on these questions:

  • What strengths do I bring to this job? What will help me?
  • What are my development needs? What might hinder me from being successful?
  • What aspects of this job might be particularly challenging for me?
  • What can I learn from this job? What do I want to learn?
  • What are the organization’s goals for me in this job?
  • What are my own goals in this job?
  • What are the people reporting directly to me, my boss and my peers like?
  • Who can help me and provide support?
  • How can I monitor my learning?
  • What am I learning? Anything I did not expect?
  • What will I do differently if faced with a similar situation in the future?
  • What mistakes have I made? What was my greatest success? What have I learned from them?
