The Walter F. Ulmer, Jr. Applied Research Award is named in honor of Walter F. Ulmer, Jr., retired president, for his contributions to CCL and the leadership field, to demonstrate CCL’s commitment to applied research, and to build connections with other professionals whose work and commitments are congruent with CCL’s. An internal committee (Dave Altman and John Ryan) determines the winner. He or she receives $1,500 and a trip to the Center to attend the Research Awards Event.

Dr. Belle Rose Ragins

Dr. Belle Rose Ragins, has been chosen as the 2015 Walter F. Ulmer, Jr. Award Recipient for her outstanding achievements and contributions to the field of leadership.

Belle Rose Ragins is a Professor of Management at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her research interests focus on mentoring, diversity and positive relationships at work. Her work appears in such top-tier outlets as the Academy of Management Review, the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology and Psychological Bulletin. She is co-author of Mentoring and Diversity: An International Perspective, and co-editor of The Handbook of Mentoring at Work andExploring Positive Relationships at Work.

Dr. Ragins has received a number of national awards for her research, including the Sage Life-Time Achievement Award for Scholarly Contributions to Management, the Academy of Management Mentoring Legacy Award, the ASTD Research Award, the Saroj Parasuraman Best Publication Award, and eight other Best Paper Awards from the National Academy of Management.

Belle has over twenty years of experience serving on leading editorial boards, including the Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, and Personnel Psychology. She served as Associate Editor for the Academy of Management Review and is currently the Editor-In-Chief of the journal.

Dr. Ragins is an invited member of the Society for Organizational Behavior, a Fulbright Senior Specialist Scholar, and a Fellow of the Society for Industrial-Organizational Psychology (SIOP), the American Psychological Society (APS), the Society for the Psychology of Women (SPW), and the American Psychological Association (APA).

In addition to her research, she has helped many organizations improve their mentoring and diversity programs. She has worked with JPMorgan-Chase, Rockwell Automation, Miller-Coors Brewing, Andersen Consulting, Quarles & Brady, the Internal Revenue Service, Foley and Lardner, Briggs & Stratton, Dean Foods, Harley Davidson and others. She has also received numerous teaching awards from her university, including the university-wide UWM Alumni Association Award for Teaching Excellence.
