CCL Research Awards

The Center for Creative Leadership sponsors awards to stimulate outstanding field research and its creative application to the practice of leadership.

H. Smith Richardson, Jr. 2009 Visiting Fellow at the Center for Creative Leadership

Dr. Dharm P.S. BhawukDr. Dharm P.S. Bhawuk has been appointed a 2009 H. Smith Richardson, Jr. Visiting Fellow at the Center for Creative Leadership. He is professor of management and culture and community psychology at Shidler College of Business, University of Hawaii, Manoa.

Dr. Bhawuk earned his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research interests include cross-cultural training, individualism and collectivism, intercultural sensitivity, culture and leadership, workplace diversity, indigenous psychology and management, culture and entrepreneurship, and political behavior in the workplace. He has published more than 50 book chapters and papers and is a co-editor of the book Asian Contributions to Cross-Cultural Psychology (1996), Sage Publishers.

The Kenneth E. Clark Student Research Award

The Center for Creative Leadership is sponsoring the annual Kenneth E. Clark Student Research Award to recognize outstanding unpublished papers by undergraduate and graduate students.

Marisa AdelmanMarisa Adelman is an organizational science researcher and scholar. She received her Master's in Industrial/Organizational Psychology in May of 2009 and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Organizational Science at UNC Charlotte. Prior to moving to Charlotte in 2007, Marisa received her Bachelor's of Science in Psychology from Colorado State University and her Master's in Student Affairs from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Her primary research interests include leadership, managerial derailment, social effectiveness, and work-family balance. Upon graduation, Marisa plans to pursue a career in organizational consulting. The Kenneth E. Clark Student Research Award recognizes outstanding unpublished papers by undergraduate and graduate students. The award is named in memory of Kenneth Clark, a distinguished scholar and former president of CCL. The winner receives a $1,500 prize and a trip to the Center to present the paper in a colloquium. European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology (EJWOP) Best Paper Award

2008 Award Winner

Dr. Jennifer L. Sparr Dr. Jennifer L. Sparr received the 2008 EJWOP award for a paper titled "Fairness Perceptions of Supervisor Feedback, LMX, and Employee Well-being at Work," published with Sabine Sonnentag in Volume 17(2). She received her Ph.D. from the University of Konstanz in 2008 and works as project manager for a market and organizational research institute in Cologne, Germany.

2007 Award Winner

Dr. Jörg FelfeDr. Jörg Felfe, who earned his Ph.D. in at FU Berlin and a state doctorate at the Martin-Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, received the 2007 EJWOP award for a paper titled "Romance of Leadership and Management Decision-Making." The paper, published with Lars-Eric Petersen in Volume 16 (1), argues that top leaders' decision-making behavior is influenced by their romance of leadership scores.

The EJWOP Best Paper Award is jointly sponsored by CCL and the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology. The award recognizes high-quality scholarly work on leadership and organizational effectiveness. Annual EJWOP awards are announced every two years, coinciding with the European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology International Conference in May. The two authors receive $1,000 and a chance to present their papers at the 2009 conference in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

The Walter F. Ulmer Jr. Applied Research Award

Nancy J. AdlerNancy J. Adler, has been chosen as the 2009 Walter F. Ulmer, Jr. Award Recipient for her outstanding achievements and contributions to the field of leadership. Read her bio.

The Walter F. Ulmer, Jr. Applied Research Award is named in honor of Walter F. Ulmer, Jr., retired president, for his contributions to CCL and the leadership field, to demonstrate CCL's commitment to applied research, and to build connections with other professionals whose work and commitments are congruent with CCL's. An internal committee (Dave Altman and John Ryan) determines the winner. He or she receives $1,500 and a trip to the Center to attend the Research Awards Event.

Leadership Quarterly Award

Dr. Ginamarie Scott Ligon

The Leadership Quarterly Best Paper Award, sponsored by the Center for Creative Leadership, is presented annually in recognition of the best published paper submitted during the previous year to The Leadership Quarterly. The 2008 winner is Dr. Ginamarie Scott Ligon. Read her bio.
