Inez Moore Tenenbaum, South Carolina State Superintendent of Education, to Receive Distinguished Alumni Award

Greensboro, N.C. - The Center for Creative Leadership (CCL), a nonprofit educational institution with a singular focus on leadership, has named Inez Moore Tenenbaum, South Carolina State Superintendent of Education, the recipient of its third annual Distinguished Alumni Award.

Tenenbaum attended the Center's Leadership at the Peak program in March 2000, and she has been instrumental in making leadership a fundamental requirement for school reform as part of South Carolina's strategic plan for education.

"It is thrilling to be selected for such a prestigious honor," Tenenbaum said. "I'd like to think that this award recognizes the work of our entire team here at the State Department of Education. There's no doubt in my mind that we're making progress toward our goal, and that is to provide a top-quality education for every student in South Carolina."

A former schoolteacher and attorney, Tenenbaum is committed to raising the quality of education in South Carolina through comprehensive and sustained reform. Her priorities include raising academic standards through accountability; making sure every child starts school ready to learn; improving the quality of the state's principals and teachers; ensuring that schools are safe and healthy places for learning; and increasing the support of parents and communities in public schools.

Tenenbaum is also the founder of the South Carolina Center for Family Policy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reforming the state's juvenile justice system. Prior to creating the Center for Family Policy, she practiced with the law firm of Sinkler & Boyd, P.A. from 1986-1992.

The Center will present the Distinguished Alumni Award to Ward during its third annual Friends of the Center Leadership Conference being held in partnership with the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, Inc., May 30 - June 1, 2001, in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Center for Creative Leadership Distinguished Alumni Award was established in 1999 to honor the accomplishments and continuing growth and development of individuals who have participated in its leadership development programs. Through this annual recognition of one of its alumni, the Center hopes to inspire leaders everywhere to continue to face their daily leadership challenges with courage, optimism, spirit and grace. Previous award recipients include Gen. Norman P. Schwarzkopf (U.S. Army Retired).
