Leadership in Action aims to help practicing leaders and those who train and develop practicing leaders by providing them with insights gained in the course of CCL's educational and research activities. It also aims to provide a forum for the exchange of information and ideas between practitioners and CCL staff and associates.

The recent global economic downturn seems to have diminished belief in talent as the most important corporate resource, as organizations around the world lay off thousands of people. But some organizations recognize that the ability to develop effective leaders remains critical to achieving competitive advantage and that organizations that do not have the right leadership talent in place will not survive when the economy eventually rebounds. Corporate diversity programs and board reform movements have increased the diversity of companies' leadership with regard to race, gender, ethnic backgrounds, and other important qualities, but a phenomenon known as homophily—the tendency of individuals to like and associate with others who are similar to themselves—remains pervasive.
