Managerial Promotion: The Dynamics for Men and WomenCCL Press1996

Marian N. Ruderman, Patricia J. Ohlott, and Kathy E. Kram

Although women have made considerable progress into management ranks in the last 20 years, it is generally acknowledged that the rate of their advancement has not kept pace with their increasing educational achievements and career commitments. One organizational practice affecting the mobility of women, which has received relatively little research attention, is the decision process used in promotions. This publication reports on a study of the gender differences in the promotion decisions concerning women made over a two-year period in an American Fortune 500 company. Explanations for, and implications of, the findings are discussed.
