Conflict in Teams: Maximize Potential, Limit Pitfalls

Conflict is part of team life; in fact, 85 percent of people experience conflict on a regular or constant basis, according to a CCL Poll. The important question to ask, according to Craig Runde and Tim Flanagan, authors of Building Conflict Competent Teams, is, "What kind of conflict is it?"

Task conflict occurs when people have differences about the work and the issues that the team faces. The focus remains on solving the problem. Relationship conflict happens when people focus more on who is to blame rather than how to solve the problem.
