No More Glass Ceiling: New Thinking on Women in Leadership
Results of the CCL Poll: Leadership Image

In our April 2008 Leading Effectively e-newsletter, readers were asked how they invested in their leadership image. We received several hundred responses to our questions. We share those results here.

How important is leadership image in your current role?
Nearly all respondents believed leadership image was a critical factor in their current roles, with 71 percent citing it as very important and 27 percent as somewhat important.

How important is leadership image in the roles to which you aspire?
A vast percentage of respondents - 91 percent - reported that leadership image was very important with regard to future roles and opportunities. Only two percent of readers felt it lacked importance.

I have made an effort to build my image as a leader.
Responses indicate that 84 percent of readers have taken measures to enhance their leadership image. Fourteen percent of respondents neither agreed or disagreed with this statement, and only two percent stated that they had taken no action.

Which activities have you used to hone your image as a leader?
Practicing speeches/presentations and preparing remarks in advance were among the most popular activities for image building - followed closely by 360-degree feedback and other, more informal, feedback from colleagues.

Which activities are you likely to use in the future to hone your image as a leader?
Going forward, it appears that respondents plan to hone their image using the same types of activities they are already engaged in.
