Did you know ...

That effective leadership is crucial for organizations that strive to succeed, according to the Triple Bottom Line (TBL)?

TBL evaluates business success by three factors: social performance, economic performance and environmental performance. A recent CCL study showed that leaders believe taking care of people, profits and the planet are critical to organizational success, both now and in the future.

According to the study, the three most critical individual leadership competencies necessary for adopting TBL approaches are:

  • Having a long-term view. If a leader isn't looking ahead, beyond a quarterly or even yearly focus, he or she cannot readily assess the full impact his or her organization has on environmental and social issues.
  • Effective communication. TBL is a new concept in most organizations. Leaders need to be able to explain the big picture, as well as to effectively make connections between TBL and specific, daily work.
  • Ability to influence. Leaders who introduce and advocate for TBL are challenging the dominant beliefs of the current system. They need to be able to influence others throughout the organization and find ways to sustain involvement and motivation.

"In many ways the skills that leaders need to lead any large-scale change are the ones needed to implement TBL," explains CCL's Laura Quinn. "The difference is in the mindset with which these competencies are implemented. Taking on a TBL perspective requires a commitment to sustainability, even when it isn't easy."
