Leading Effectively e-Newsletter - July 2003 Issue

Leadership Is Personal: Purpose, Authenticity and Survival

Leadership is a highly personal activity. Who you are affects how you lead - and your leadership experiences impact the person you are. This issue of the CCL e-newsletter takes a look at the personal side of living as a leader: What motivates and inspires you? What does it feel like to be a leader? What are you doing today to ensure the leader in you thrives and survives?

Survival Mode: Staying Alive Through the Dangers of Leading
Most discussions on leadership - especially during crisis and change - focus on what to do, what your strategy should be, and what qualities you should take on to be a more effective leader. According to Ronald A. Heifetz and Marty Linsky, authors of Leadership on the Line: Staying Alive Through the Dangers of Leading, the essential questions to ask when taking on a leadership role are: How will my leadership initiatives cause resistance? And how will I survive it? (more...)

The Role of Why: How a Sense of Purpose Makes a Difference
What makes the difference between a confident, purposeful and resilient leader and one who is easily distracted and blown off course with a shift in wind? "A sense of purpose," answers the Center for Creative Leadership's Victoria Guthrie. (more...)

In Times of Crisis: Lead Yourself, Lead Others
Nothing tests a leader like a crisis. How a leader handles the emotions, behaviors and attitudes of the people involved in or facing a crisis reveals something of his or her deepest character. Of course, leaders must also lead themselves through crisis. They must deal with their own emotions and needs. For some leaders, this is the biggest challenge of all. (more...)

Being True: The Importance of Being Authentic
"To thine own self be true" may be a well-worn platitude, but Shakespeare's wisdom is becoming a renewed priority among leaders and managers, according to research from the Center for Creative Leadership. (more...)

To Your Health: Exercise Increases Effectiveness
The job of the corporate executive is a busy and stressful one. The hours are long with a daily agenda of non-stop meetings and few breaks. Travel schedules can be hectic with some executives spending up to a third of the year on the road. This demanding schedule, along with family and personal obligations, leaves many executives saying they can't take the time to exercise. Yet, data on senior-level executives attending CCL's Leadership at the Peak courses indicate that regular exercise and leadership effectiveness go hand-in-hand. (more...)

Come and PLAY at the Friends of the Center Leadership Conference
In addition to all of the networking opportunities and presentations of the latest ideas on leadership presented by thought-leaders, authors and Center staff, this year's Friends of the Center Leadership Conference will include an interactive "PLAY" session. Andy Stefanovich, founder of PLAY, a creative consultancy, believes creativity is a critical problem-solving tool that can be primed within a corporation through learnable skills, leadership behaviors and helpful processes. Andy's session is based on a concept he calls i.c.i. (inspired, creative and innovative). He will share his belief that innovative companies breed inspired, creative and innovative cultures, using a systematic approach and behavioral mindset that creates a continuous cycle of new ideas.

The Center will host this three-day conference October 8-10, 2003 in Orlando, Florida, U.S.A. Visit www.ccl.org/foclc to learn more.
