What do we know about the learning journeys of effective leaders? First, these leaders continue to develop their skills throughout their careers. Second, a significant part of this development occurs through work and life experiences. And third, the more varied these practical experiences, the greater the likelihood of developing a broad repertoire of skills. The message for increasing your own effectiveness: Shape your work and life experiences so that they provide opportunities to expand your leadership capabilities.

A new Leading Effectively webinar from the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL®) shares insights from the fieldbook, Developmental Assignments: Creating Learning Experiences without Changing Jobs. The premise of this fieldbook is that job moves are not the only route to developmental assignments; shaping your current job and nonwork pursuits may be a more practical way to stretch and grow as a leader. The webinar focuses on ways to more intentionally seek out and design your own developmental assignments (and help others do the same).

In this session you will learn:

  • Why a wide variety of development assignments is important to your career
  • How to shape your current job and nonwork pursuits to grow as a leader
  • How to help others find assignments that meet their development goals
  • Ideas for temporary and long-term assignments that offer learning opportunities

Maximizing the Value of the Webinar

  • Invite others to participate. Structure a group "lunch and learn" session and invite other colleagues to attend.
  • Debrief the lessons learned. Set aside time at the end of the Webinar to discuss takeaways, and how they apply to your group or organization
  • Tap into your training budget. Ask your HR group or manager to underwrite the Webinar as part of your organization's ongoing staff development effort.
