An increasing number of bright young managers with unusually high levels of talent, intellect and ambition are rising to very senior levels of responsibility on an accelerated career path. Unfortunately, these young executives often arrive with gaps in the critical developmental experiences needed to hone them into authentic, mature and emotionally competent leaders.

This session will draw on lessons learned in CCL's Awareness Program for Executive Excellence (APEX), an intensive 18-month assessment, feedback and coaching experience for C-Level Executives and those ascending to these positions. We will address:

  • Patterns of career advancement and progression that have contributed to the rise of "young and clueless" high potential managers into senior leadership positions
  • The CEO's view of the dilemma and the role he/she often plays in creating the problem
  • Why these young and clueless rising stars are worth rescuing
  • The rising star's view of the situation
  • A perspective on life-stage patterns of leader development
  • Problems and challenges in helping these young leaders develop emotional competence and maturity
  • What it takes to intervene and rescue a young and clueless leader who is already sitting in a senior level position
  • Five strategies for preventing the problem in the first place

Audience: Senior HR executives and coaches responsible for the development of top level executives and those high-potentials on a path to fill such positions. This session would also be beneficial for aspiring senior leaders.
