The importance of innovation leadership
Many senior executives are talking about the importance of innovation and most of them are struggling to make it a reality in their organizations. In survey after survey on strategic priorities, innovation is almost always listed as one of the top drivers of success in every region of the world. Major research studies show that increased innovation leads to stronger market and financial performance. Given its enormous importance, why do so many organizations struggle to nurture and sustain innovation? Why is there such a gap between the desire to innovate and the ability to make it happen? One big reason: leadership is not adept at navigating the natural tension between running the business and creating space to develop something new. In many organizations, "running the business" almost always wins. The key to resolving this dilemma does not lie in systems, processes or strategies — it has to do with people and whether there is a leadership culture that supports innovation in place. This module is designed to identify the leadership perspectives, skills, processes, tools and culture that drive and support strategic innovation across the organization.
Managing others for the first time means it's no longer about "me" anymore.
Perhaps you've heard the classic breakup excuse, "It's not you, it's me." When we coach managers who are leading others for the first time, we like to put a little spin on this phrase. The leader's philosophy must now be, "It's not about me anymore." Transitioning from leading self to leading others requires you to flip several important aspects of your leadership. It is no longer sufficient for leaders to think about "my" own needs, skills and tasks. The new leader must broaden his or her scope, skills, and perspectives.
