CCL's 'both/and' strategy for Africa aims to reach out to both high-level (corporate and government) leaders and grassroots community leaders across the continent. The goal of the strategy is two-way: to spread best-practices in leadership, and to learn from Africa's leadership best practices.

The strategy includes the following actions:

• Development of integrated and coherent partnerships with NGOs, academia and other organizations which can complement the work of CCL and spread our reach. This may also involve strengthening our existing offerings with partners on the ground such as the European Commission, USAID, USB ED, Unity University NEPAD and Optimentus.
• Recognizing the unique business environment in Africa. Unlike their North American and European counterparts, African executives and CEOs are very focused on the impact of their businesses on the local economy and community as well as society in general. CCL must understand what type of leadership culture strategy is sustainable in this environment.
• CCL aims to increase both its grassroots and corporate work. Our office in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) is involved in our grassroots or social activities. We work with NGOs and other organizations on projects which democratize leadership on local issues such as health, female leadership, youth, HIV/AIDS. CCL's office in Johannesburg (South Africa) focuses on corporate work, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. This includes training for business and government leaders. Courses are tailored to recognize the unique African business environment with its increased focus on community.
• Establishing the CCL Africa Leadership Team and associated resources. CCL believes that learning is two-way and that Africa has a lot to offer the rest of the world. The Leadership Team brings together CCL's African experts with their counterparts from other regions of the world. Their goal is to recognize local differences in leadership and spread best practices globally.
• Expanding CCL Research in Africa. Although our presence in Africa is at an early stage, research is already underway to enable CCL to gain an accurate picture of the general business environment, trends in leadership and development programs, and the key training priorities of African organizations. CCL plans to undertake further research, particularly into indigenous leadership to determine which models can be effective.
